Dating is the space in between meeting up and actually being in a relationship. Online dating is the modern venue in which to find your ideal partner. It is a great way to meet new people, make new friends and have lots of fun. Dating is about getting to know people and then seeing if you enjoy spending time with them. While looks and chemistry is important, the best insurance for success in dating is starting with compatibility.
There is a stereotypical idea that online dating/relationships are unhealthy. If you run a search on one of the major search engines you will find lots of sites who are anti online dating and lots that are pro online dating. It is up to you to decide whether you are going to follow the online route. You, as an adult, must use your discretion when inputting your details into one of these sites.
Here are a few tips to stay safe online:-
*Do not believe everything you read online. People tend to exaggerate their looks, lie about their age and income just to entice someone into a relationship. It is human nature; we all do it.
*Never reveal your personal details. Avoid giving out your telephone number, address and actual email address. Instead, use the online anonymity that most dating sites allows you to use and set up a separate email account for this purpose.
*Do not rush into a relationship. Get to know the person online before you arrange to meet him on a date. Look out for inconsistencies in his answers and challenge them.
*Report to the dating agency if you are uncomfortable with any comments someone has made, if they have use threatening behavior or inappropriate language.
*Look out for anyone who portrays signs of anger, frustration or obsessive and/or controlling behavior. This is not the kind of person that you would like to become heavily involved with. If they are showing these signs online you have to consider what they would be like on a date.
*If you do arrange a date make sure that you give your details to a friend or relative. They could be along the lines of:- the name of your date, where you are going, how you are getting there, what time you will be home. Ask them to ring you during your date and when you are due to arrive home.
If you do find the one online, how do you make it work?
Be prepared to put some time in on developing your online relationships before you embark on an offline relationship.
Remember that although online dating may be the safest way to date and establish relationships in a slow and confidential manner there still are risks. Because making friends and dating online is changing the pattern of how relationships develop, it means we have to rethink some of our assumptions. Make sure that you read my safety tips again and have a safe and happy year online.
